The HKDSE Maths 5** Roadmap (2026 Edition)

A 5** in HKDSE Maths isn't about grinding more papers — it's about spending limited time on the highest-value topics, and knowing exactly where you lose marks every time you practise. Here's a battle-tested roadmap from S5 to exam day.

What a 5** actually takes

A 5** roughly maps to 85%+ across Paper 1 and Paper 2. That means you can't drop step marks on questions you "know", you must reliably secure the key M / A marks on harder items, and your pace has to hold.

In short: a 5** is won by losing fewer marks, not by solving more hard questions.

Three phases

Phase 1 — Foundations (late S5 → early S6). Work through every syllabus objective: functions, equations, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, probability & statistics. Confirm "I can do this", then run a past paper to find gaps.

Phase 2 — Fix weaknesses (early S6 → 3 months out). This decides whether you land 5 or 5**. Don't redo everything — drill only your weakest objectives, found via mock diagnostics.

Phase 3 — Speed & defence (final 3 months). Timed mocks, time allocation, and checking habits. Turn "I know it but keep slipping" questions into ones you never miss.

Spend time where it pays

Functions, trig, coordinate geometry and statistics are high-frequency, high-mark areas — master them first. Rare topics have low return on investment; leave them for later.

Pinpoint weakness with step-marking

Checking answers only tells you right or wrong — not why you lost the mark.
