
DSE Maths Below Your Target Grade? Official Data Shows Which Topics to Fix This Summer
After results day, if you want to push Maths from Level 3 to 4 or 5 next year, where should the summer go? We ran the numbers on 2012–2024 question frequency and official HKEAA correct rates — the grade gap lives in a handful of high-frequency, low-correct-rate topics.
If Maths came in below your target on results day, don't panic — and don't just "grind questions all summer". What you drill and in what order matters far more than how much. This post uses real data to put your summer where it counts.
A counter-intuitive but data-backed starting point:
Your Maths grade isn't decided by "knowing a bit of everything" — it's decided by whether you have a handful of high-frequency, most-commonly-missed topics locked down.
What to revise is a data question, not a guess
We counted question frequency across 2012–2024 DSE Maths Compulsory Part past papers, and aggregated the territory-wide per-question correct rates HKEAA published in its answer keys. Put the two together and it's clear:
- Rectangular coordinate system: 162 questions in 13 years (12+ a year on average), territory-wide correct rate just 43.6%.
- Trigonometry: 81 questions, 43.8% correct.
- Angles and parallel lines: 50 questions, 48.0% correct.
What does "43.6% correct" mean? More than half of all candidates got these wrong — and they're the most-examined, highest-weight topics. By contrast:
- Percentages and measures of central tendency: both around 66% correct.
A 66% topic is one most people get right. Drop marks there and you're losing marks you shouldn't.
Where the "Level 3 to Level 4/5" gap hides
An honest caveat first: HKEAA publishes overall correct rates, not a per-grade breakdown. So nobody can say precisely "Level 3 students specifically miss this question."
But a reasonable inference holds: the lower a topic's territory-wide correct rate, the more it separates candidates into different grades. A question 66% get right can't create a gap; a question only 43% get right — the ones who get it are usually the ones moving up.
So if your goal is to climb a grade or two, your summer should sit on the high-frequency × low-correct-rate topics — that's where the room to gain is largest. Not a hunch; just two objective facts (examined often, widely missed) stacked together.
Don't be scared off by "senior is hard": two-thirds of the exam is junior-form content
Many students assume revising Maths means grinding new senior topics from scratch. The frequency data says otherwise, and it's a relief:
About two-thirds of 2012–2024 questions involve only junior-form (S1–S3) knowledge — 67% of Paper 1, 64% of Paper 2.
The three worst loss zones above (coordinates, trigonometry, angles & parallel lines) are all junior-form geometry and coordinate content. Your summer isn't about mastering something exotic — it's about re-securing the junior-form basics: slope and distance, sine/cosine rule, angle chasing. Get the foundation solid and you can actually receive the senior questions.
Beyond topics: marking points recover marks without learning anything new
There's a low-cost, high-return job for the summer: understand that DSE Maths is marked step by step.
We counted 1049 marking points across 13 years of Paper 1 schemes — method (M) and accuracy (A) marks are almost an even split. Nearly half the marks are for your working, not the final answer. Many students think a wrong last step means zero; in fact a correct method still earns the M mark, and follow-through gives more. Make the summer a plan, not a pile of workbooks
Putting it together, a data-grounded summer rhythm:
- First, fix the junior-form basics of the high-frequency loss zones: coordinates, trigonometry, angles & parallel lines. This decides whether you can receive the harder questions.
- Then attack the high-frequency senior units: the equation of a circle, measures of dispersion, quadratic equations — the three most examined senior topics.
- Drill marking-point awareness in parallel: write full working, add units, check precision on every question.
- Review weekly: see which topics still leak marks, and push there next week.
