JUPAS 2026: Programme Choice & DSE Score Strategy
Once your DSE results are in, how do you band your JUPAS choices? This guide covers minimum requirements, weighted scoring, Band A/B/C strategy, and choosing subjects from your target.
The DSE is only half the game — how well you order your JUPAS choices decides which university you actually enter. Here are the key rules and strategy.
Minimum entry requirements first
Most programmes at Hong Kong's eight universities require "332233": Chinese 3, English 3, Maths 2, Citizenship & Social Development attained, plus two electives at 3. Popular programmes (medicine, law, global business) demand more and may specify electives. Confirm your target's minimum before talking competitiveness.
Weighted scoring: subjects aren't equal
Many programmes weight DSE subjects differently — engineering weights maths more, language programmes weight English more. The same total converts to a different "score" per programme. Always check the scoring formula (best 5 / weighted subjects) before ranking.
Band A / B / C strategy
JUPAS allows 20 choices, grouped into Band A (1–3), Band B (4–6), and so on:
- Band A — your reach programmes (slightly above your estimate);
- Band B — solid matches to your estimate;
- Band C onward — safety choices.
Many programmes favour or only consider Band A applicants — so don't fill Band A entirely with impossible reaches, nor waste it on safeties.
Choose subjects from your target
Still in S5 and able to adjust electives? See which two or three subjects your target programme values most and load effort there. One 5** in a weighted subject often beats two marginal 4s.
Knowing your predicted grade earlier
